Scholarships, Fellowships, & Grants

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi's ongoing commitment to excellence is reflected in its scholarships and awards programs. $1 million is awarded each biennium to outstanding students, Phi Kappa Phi members and chapters through the Society's various awards competitions:  Fellowship Grants, Study Abroad Grants, Literacy Grants, and Love of Learning Awards. The SDSU Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi also awards scholarships annually to SDSU students in addition to the scholarship opportunities available to you from the national Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. 

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi currently awards fifty Fellowships of $8,500 each, six Fellowships of $20,000 each, and two at $35,000 each to Phi Kappa Phi members entering their first year of graduate or professional study. Each active Phi Kappa Phi chapter may select one candidate from among its local applicants to compete for the Society-wide awards.

Selection Criteria

Selection is based on the applicant’s promise of success in graduate or professional study, as evidenced by:

  • Academic achievement, including transcripts, honors and awards, relevant research experience, standardized test scores, and samples of creative work
  • Service and leadership experience, on and off campus
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Personal statement and career goals
  • Work Sample
  • Acceptance/Application at an approved graduate or professional program

Eligibility

  • Be an active member of Phi Kappa Phi (annual dues paid by April 15 of the current year) or have accepted membership by June 30 of the year in which you are applying.  Applications will be accepted from individuals selected for membership but not yet initiated; see the application form for details.
  • Have applied to enroll as a full-time student in a post-baccalaureate program of study for the current academic year.  Accredited international institutions are acceptable.

Please note:

  • International students are eligible.
  • Students registering in all professional and graduate fields are eligible.
  • Applicants should not hold other graduate degrees; this should be their first graduate program.
  • Applicants who have successfully completed 10 or more graduate credits on or before April 15 are not eligible.
  • Winners may defer for up to two years, pending approval.
  • Applicants cannot be a sitting Phi Kappa Phi board member, regional vice president, member of the Fellowship Award Committee or Society employee.

How to Apply

Go to Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship to review submission instructions and access the application form via the “Apply Online” link. Complete the online application and print it out.  Turn in hard copies of your completed application packet (completed application form, academic transcripts, two letters of recommendation with request forms, and reports of standardized test scores, letter of acceptance/application at an approved graduate or professional program) to SDSU Phi Kappa Phi Scholarship Director, Dr. Michelle Dean by 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, 2020.  Due to the COVID-19 situation, please email each document as separate attachments to [email protected]. Please hold on to all originals.  You will be contacted if the chapter will need these from you.

Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants are designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad. The National Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi awards 75 Study Abroad Grants of $1000 each and the SDSU Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi awards up to four Study Abroad Grants of $500 each. You are encouraged to apply for both the SDSU and National Phi Kappa Phi study abroad grant programs. Recently, one of our local $500 recipients also received a $1000 National Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grant! See special instructions for applying for a SDSU PKP study abroad grant below.

Eligibility

Both the National Phi Kappa Phi and the SDSU Chapter Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants are open to any undergraduate student (you do not have to be a Phi Kappa Phi member) who meets the following requirements:

Have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.75 on a 4.0 scale;

The study aboard program must begin between:
May 1, 2020 - June 30, 2021 

Have applied and/or been accepted into a study abroad program (provide a letter of acceptance on official letterhead as part of your application*);

* If an official letter of acceptance is not available at the time of submission, then the applicant may obtain a letter from his or her school (on official letterhead) verifying the submission of an application and the student’s intent to travel abroad;

Previous winners are not eligible to apply.

Apply for a National ($1,000) Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grant

Go to http://www.phikappaphi.org/grants-awards/study-abroad to review submission instructions and access the online application via the “Apply Online” link. The application form must be submitted electronically via the National Phi Kappa Phi website for consideration. Included in a completed submission package are the application form you complete online, and the following files uploaded along with your application: an official transcript, two letters of recommendation, and a letter of acceptance (or letter verifying application to a study abroad program). Please upload as PDF files to ensure that your materials are accessible. The selection committee will disregard materials they cannot access.  National Phi Kappa Phi application process is ALL ELECTRONIC and does not accept paper materials via snail mail.

Apply for an SDSU ($500) Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grant

In order to be considered for a SDSU Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grant, you must first complete the application process for a ($1,000) national Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grant in order to access a pdf version of your completed application form to submit to apply for a SDSU grant.

Step 1: Complete and submit the online application package on the National Phi Kappa Phi website for consideration for one of 75 $1000 grants available from National Phi Kappa Phi. Once you submit your application online to national PKP, you will be given an option to download a PDF of your completed application—save your completed application as a PDF file.

Step 2: You have two options to submit your application and materials for consideration for a $500 SDSU Chapter Study Aboard Grant – you may either email pdfs of the completed application and supplementary materials (official transcript, two letters of recommendation, and letter of acceptance or verification of application to a study abroad program) to SDSU Phi Kappa Phi Scholarship Director, Dr. Michelle Dean, at [email protected] or you may turn in your application and supplementary materials in hard copy form to the following address:

Love of Learning Awards help fund post-baccalaureate studies and/or career development opportunities including graduate or professional studies, doctoral dissertations, continuing education, and travel related to teaching or studies. The National Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society awards up to 200 Love of Learning awards of $500 each.

Eligibility

Open to all active (dues current) Phi Kappa Phi members who have completed baccalaureate studies by the application deadline.*

*Recipients of the Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship are not eligible to apply for Love of Learning Awards. You should apply for both concurrently in the event you are not chosen as the Fellowship recipient.

As part of Phi Kappa Phi’s mission “to engage the community of scholars in service to others,” grants of up to $2500 are available to champion literacy initiatives

Selection Criteria

  • The definition of literacy should be considered broadly.
  • Proposals may be for new projects or for support of existing projects. Project directors must reapply each year to receive funding, and they must be active Society members.
  • Target groups may include preschool children to adults.
  • Budget can be under only for supplies and materials, publicity, postage, etc. No salaries of stipends included.

Eligibility

Literacy Grants are available to Phi Kappa Phi chapters and active members for projects relating to literacy.

Members should feel free to consider literacy either as a basic skill to be taught to those in need or as a set of expanded skills including math, computers, and more.

Chapters or individual members may consider either starting a literacy project on campus or in the community or contributing in some way to an existing literacy project. Duration of the project may be either short-term, one-time activity, or a longer ongoing series of activities. Please refer to the Literacy Grant application for suggestions on the range of possibilities that may be considered.
